- Barbara Medina spent her early
years in South Carolina but was drawn to New Mexico while still very
young, even though most southerners thought NM was a foreign
country. She has a BA in Spanish and an MA in Elementary Education.
- Her first job in NM was in
Albuquerque at Martineztown HNS where she worked for three years
with girls’ programs. After her marriage she lived in Chicago for
four years, working with Cook County Social Services where the
inner-city poverty is heart-breaking. The couple then moved to Los
Angeles where she began a public school teaching career, which
continued with her move back to northern NM until her retirement in
1996.
-
- Barbara has always felt a call to
service. When she moved to Santa Fe in 1988 after a divorce, she
began volunteering with various church mission projects in Mexico,
Colombia and Costa Rica. She has also volunteered with various local
agencies and for seven years has been active with Amigos del
Parque, providing breakfast for the homeless/unemployed migrants
who stand at DeVargas Park hoping for day jobs.
-
- Her involvement with the Interfaith
Shelter began four years ago when, the first week of that first
winter, Westminster Presbyterian Church served meals and provided
overnight shelter for the men. As with so many volunteers, meeting
and talking with homeless people was an eye-opening experience for
Barbara.
-
- Barbara is grateful for the
opportunity to work with and support the Interfaith Community
Shelter Group’s goals of providing winter shelter, helping people
to become self-sufficient and, one day, ending homelessness.

great things, only small things with great love.” – Mother
